Scattered across the world are some of the most inexplicable and mysterious places that are covered with perplexity and conjecture. Dogged by theories and tales speculated over time, these enigmatic places are tangible riddles that still remain unsolved. One of these enigmatic places is the Nazca lines located in Southern Peru.
The most inscrutable thing about this bizarre place is the huge ancient Geoglyphs carved in the land somewhere between 500 BCE and 500 CE. The huge drawings carved in the sand feature an astronaut, a killer whale, a spider, a monkey with a spiral tail, outlandish beings, a Heron, and some other strange geometric figures. There are over 13000 lines and approximately 800 figures, and the largest geoglyph among these figures is almost 1200 ft long. These mind-boggling figures can only be seen from a plane or a helicopter flying over the desert. These lines were first discovered in the 1930’s when Toribio Mejia Xesspe, a commercial plane pilot took off and flew over Southern Peru. He discovered several huge figures while flying over the desert, and reported these sightings to the authority. These figures have been subject to mystery and speculation ever since.
While on board a flight to the Republic of Peru, soaring over the Nazca desert, one can clearly see these figures through the window. Setting our sight on these amazing geoglyphs, several questions puzzle our minds. Who created these lines? How is it possible to create such massive figures without keeping a check from a height using a plane or some flying object? And most importantly, what purpose do they serve? A lot of theories have been put forward to answer these questions, however, these theories are only based on assumptions made by scientists and archeologists, and despite their speculations, the mystery behind these lines remains unsolved.
Let’s shed some light on a few of the major theories surrounding these prehistoric geoglyphs. Maria Reiche, a famous German Archeologist, Mathematician, and Technical Translator argued that these figures have astrological significance. For instance, the figure that looks like a monkey has a spiral tail that indicates the cosmos, and it directly correlates with the Ursa Major constellation. Similarly, the Spider and the Dolphin connect with the Orion constellation. However, scientists reject this hypothesis. Gerald Hawkins in 1968 carefully studied these lines through a computerized technique and found that the lines were random and did not match any of the cosmic bodies. Another theory proposed by David Johnson, a famous American research analyst suggests that the Nazca figures are markers created to locate the underground water resources in the area. These figures work as a huge map indicating water reserves and canals. Although, the theory is interesting, however, it fails to solve the whole mystery behind the perplexing figures. Moreover, the theory cannot be applied to all the figures. Hence, it falters under inspection, or perhaps the Nazca had advanced knowledge and technology which is beyond our imagination.
Some of the figures are really mind boggling. For example, the unexpected figure of a whale in the desert. Possibly, the Nazca people honored the ocean’s largest and noblest creatures, or, is there any other theory linked to this figure. No one knows.
Another thought-provoking the and mysterious figure is that of the spider. Now, this is not an ordinary spider. Entomologists have discovered that the figure resembles the world’s rarest spider that belongs to the Ricinulei. This tiny creature lives in the Amazon forest, which is almost 932 miles way from Peru. Now, this is puzzling. What’s even more confusing is that the spider has its reproductive organs at the end of its legs, which is only visible under a microscope. How did the Nazca draw the spider with such fine details is a tough nut to crack.
Although, there is a lot of mystery linked to the prehistoric figures in the Nazca desert that provoke outlandish theories. However, the most mysterious figure among the geoglyphs is that of a strange humanoid, which many believe resembles a humanoid in a space suit. This particular figure and others that resemble the geoglyph has left the world’s pseudoscientists confused. Is it really an astronaut? Or is it something out of this world? What this bizarre figure represents remains an enigma.
Moreover, the method of constructing these 2000 years old geoglyphs that are only recognizable from high above the ground still remains a mystery. Perhaps, it was a group exercise where one group guided the drawing from high above the ground, and the other drew the lines to form the figure. However, for what purpose were they built is a secret that is yet to be uncovered.
